Lygia C Clark is one the most significant and influential artists of the second decade of the 20th century. Her art explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration. Her work included geometric sculptures and asymmetrical painting. Clark's art is often credited with pioneering the Brazilian Neo-Concrete movement.
Clark studied with Isaac Dobrinsky, Fernand Lger, and Roberto Burle Marx during her early career. In 1952, she had her first solo show in Paris. Shortly thereafter, she moved from Paris to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she immersed her self in the experimental arts scene. She also participated in the Venice Biennale in Brazil and the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil.
Lygia C Clark was born in Belo Horizonte Brazil in 1920. After graduating from University of Rio de Janeiro in art therapy and education, she became an artist, therapist and educator. A renowned artist, Clark lived a controversial and eventful life. In 1988, she died. The Clark Museum in Rio de Janeiro will host an exhibit to honor her 100th birthday.

It includes 83 pieces. It includes 83 works from Clark's entire art career. The museum gives an insight into her crucial years of development, from her earliest paintings to her last. The artist's early 1950s works show her transition from two- to three-dimensionality. Breaking the Frame is one of these geometric abstractions. It features a block made of wood at the center of the canvas. Clark's career reached a crucial turning point with this asymmetrical composition.
Throughout her career, Clark focused on redefining the relationship between the artwork and the spectator. Clark encouraged physical encounters. Clark wanted her paintings to create dynamic spaces.
Clark began experimenting with industrial paints and figurative art in the mid-1950s. Counter Relief, a series consists of wood paintings that feature a white triangle rising from a dark surface. Bichos, which is a series of polished steel sheets joined by hinges, are other works. These pieces earned the artist a sculpture prize at the 6th Biennale de Sao Paulo in 1961.
Clark's work is influenced by her psychoanalytic experiences and her study of the somaesthetics of objects. Clark used her knowledge in color, shape, as well as space to create situations which activated somaesthetic perception.

Clark's work can be seen as a message to the world of today. By the end of her career, she pared her palette to a simple black and white. At her exhibition, fans can also purchase small plastic objects to decorate with more restrained colour designs.
Lygia - The Abandonment to Art, 1948-1988 presents the first major retrospective of American artist. The exhibition features her early works as well works from her later years. It is an appropriate tribute to an internationally-recognized artist. Visitors are left curious and wanting to learn more about her artistic journey.
The Lygia Clark Museum would like to thank the World of Lygia Clark Culture Association who is sponsoring this exhibit. They also created a video archive with Clark's interviews.
