The History of Fashion Showcase

mens dresses

The history behind the fashion showcase dates back at least to the 19th-century, when Parisians began to display their goods in the streets. The fashion parades eventually spread to London as well as New York. The Ehrlich Brothers store was the venue for the first fashion show in New York in 1903. Within a few more years, other department stores began hosting fashion shows featuring women's clothes for the coming season. Eventually, fashion houses would start setting up fixed dates for runway shows. These shows were more organized in the 20th century with themes such as Russian and Chinese fashions.

Charles Frederick Worth

William Worth was born 1825 in England and opened his first fashion shop in Paris in 1858. His designs were based in his personal opinion of what a client liked to wear. He also presented live models to clients so that they could choose the appropriate design.

Worth's designs are influenced by many styles. He was inspired by the costumes of opera stars and other famous figures of the time. He even got the Empress Eugenie to help him design a line of princess gowns. The dresses were practical and easy to wear every day.

Elsa Schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli revolutionized Haute Couture over 25 years. Her avant-garde designs reflected the spirit of Paris. Elsa Schiaparelli was an artistic and curious woman who was fascinated with everything. The exhibition features more than 520 works from her life, including her famous silhouettes. Also included are iconic pieces from Salvador Dali's daughter Elsa Triolet.

Schiaparelli’s work is deeply rooted in surrealism. She often worked with unusual shapes, fabrics and materials. She embraced the Surrealist movement and worked with many artists and surrealists, including Salvador Dali. She was an early adopter of Surrealism, and she worked with some world-famous artists by the late 1930s.

Martin Margiela

Martin Margiela presented the first fashion showcase. This is where fashion showcases began. His collection featured a red-splashed runway and clothes that were upcycled from previous collections. Margiela is known for challenging conventional beauty standards throughout his career. His style can seem to be too imposing on the female form. However, it has prompted many collectors to adore his work.

In the first show that Margiela held, models hobbled on an uneven catwalk in incredible creations. The entire experience was integrated into this show. The show had visuals and an experience. There were no large logos, flashy colors or polished models.

Christian Dior

In the beginning of the exhibit, the curators lay out a timeline of Christian Dior's life, but this does little to contextualize Dior within various historical events, women's rights movements, and the Nazi regime. These things are important to mention, but the exhibit doesn't do enough to show how Dior's fashion is affecting society.

Dior was born Normandy and moved to Paris with his family at five years old. He was very interested in design and art, and decided to get an education in this area. He graduated from the Ecole des Sciences Politiques (Paris) with a degree of politics. This was a preparation for a career within diplomatic service. After a brief period as a diplomat Dior opened his very first art gallery in Paris in 1928. The tragedy that struck the Dior family was the death his brother and his mother two years later. The gallery was forced to close.
